Stainless steel range hood in a modern kitchen

Range hoods and kitchen ventilation

It is what we install most and what gets done wrong most. A hood is not a box you hang on a wall — it is working out where the air goes.

Types of hood

Which one is yours

Wall mount or chimney

The most common one. It anchors to the wall, between the upper cabinets or over the backsplash. The tricky part is anchoring when there is granite or quartz behind it.

Island

It hangs from the ceiling over the island. The frame has to be built, the duct run through the ceiling, and the hood left centered and plumb. It is the most involved one.

Under cabinet

It fits under the upper cabinet. Quick to mount if the duct is already there; if not, one has to be opened.

Downdraft vent

It rises out of the countertop when you cook and drops back down when you finish. It needs an exact cutout and the blower goes inside the cabinet. It is the most precise install we do.

The detail that matters

The ductwork is 80% of the job

A powerful hood with badly routed ductwork pulls worse than a cheap one installed right. Here is what we look at.

The shortest run possible

Every extra elbow and every extra foot costs you airflow. We always look for the most direct route out.

The right duct size

Necking the duct down so it fits is the most common shortcut, and it is exactly what stops a hood from pulling.

A real exterior vent

A hood recirculating without the right filter pushes grease and odor back into the kitchen. We check that the vent exists and is clear.

A real job

Range hood over a granite slab

Before After

The wall was a single-piece granite slab. Every anchor point was measured and taped off before drilling, because granite gives you no second chance: one hole in the wrong place means replacing the entire slab.

  • Anchor points measured and marked on the slab
  • Hood centered with the upper cabinet
  • Duct connected and airflow tested
